Hi Eva! Thank you so much for this blog. Very insightful and entertaining read. I do have a question I am hoping you can help me with. I am from Sweden, living with my family in London. We are planning on relocating to Sri Lanka in 2017. We are looking at the Galle region, how ever finding it difficult to know where to look for properties to rent. Not so much estate agents but location. Are there any no go areas? Guess we are looking for a good expat community...nice house with a bit of garden. Thank you in advance!!

Hi Anonymous from Sweden.

Thanks for the blog comments and question. I have to admit that I'm not an expert on living in Galle so I can't help you with respect to no go areas. Overall, Galle isn't that big but it has a vibrant expat community that extends beyond Galle itself along the south coast.

My suggestion would be to check out the property websites such as lamudi.lk or lankapropertyweb.com for the type of accommodation you are looking for to get an idea of price, type, location and other considerations.

There is a group on Facebook that may also be useful if you reach out with your question - Sri Lanka Expat Forum. And there are other expat forums that you could connect with like Internations Sri Lanka or IEA - Colombo that have expats who reside down south.

Hope this helps. Wishing you the best with your plans

Hi Eva,

First of all great blog, i've enjoyed reading your posts a lot!. I have a quick question regarding the expat scene. I'm a British male in my 20s and considering moving to Colombo for an NGO job for a few years. I want to make friends with locals and immerse myself in the local culture but probably i'll also want to meet expats so I don't feel too overwhelmed by culture shock. I've been told the expat community in Colombo is quite small. Would you agree? Is there much of a younger crowd too and is it quite diverse? Moving there is quite a big decision so i'm trying to get a sense of what my social life (or lack thereof) might be! Thanks

Hi Ali, Thanks for the blog love. I'd have to say the expat community is considered small in Colombo compared to other Asian countries. But having said that, it is growing (more so now than ever before). In the past couple of years there has been a noticeable influx of expats as the island has opened up and many countries and companies are jumping onto the bandwagon to get a slice of the pie. I'd say there's a distinct subset of expats - retirees (they've been here for awhile and are well-established); expats who run their own businesses or hospitality establishments around the touristy parts of island (mixed bag of expats though there are some young entrepreneurs); career expats who are doing stints for NGOs and embassies (youngish expats, usually single); expat spouses or families following an expat career move; expat spouses of Sri Lankans (more of these as expat Sri Lankans return to the island - mixed ranges of ages). I guess this gives you an idea... The social scene is actually changing as Colombo develops. There is more to see and do around Colombo (also local groups to join, like running, hiking, and more) and increasingly more places to eat and hang out with a mixed group of locals and expats. And then there's also things to do outside of Colombo. Naturally there is the touristy scene but out of Colombo, around Galle, Unawatuna and the South there is an expat community.
Hope this helps
Best of luck with your decision
Eva
